- Switch on your Personal Computer (PC).
- Select the Start button on the bottom left side of the screen.
- Select All Programs and then, click on Microsoft Word from the All Programs list.
- Double click on the Word icon.

After you have made yourself familiar with these features, it is time to understand how to open and close a document. To open a file, select Open from the File menu. In the dialog box, click on the filename and then, click on the Open button. If it is not in the folder, you can click the down arrow, next to the folder name to see the directory listing. When you save a new document for the first time, a dialog box appears. Select where you want to save the file and name it as per your preference and close the dialog box.
Next is to enter text and just start typing. You can click on the F1 key for your Office Assistant if you need any help. You can key in your query and press the Enter key. You can press the Escape key once you are done to get rid of the Office Assistant. While typing, you can use the Delete key to erase mistakes.
While these are some main points to keep in mind while undergoing your basic Microsoft Word training, it is also important to know about the key elements of the Microsoft Word. Some of these include the Menu Bar, Standard Toolbar, Formatting Tool Bar, Ruler etc. The Menu Bar has File, Edit, View, Insert, Tools among other functions. The Standard Toolbar contains icons for shortcuts to menu commands. The Formatting Toolbar contains pop-up menus for style, font, icons for bold, italic, indention-border-bullet list-number-highlight-font color icons. On the Ruler, you can set tabs, paragraph alignment and other formats.
